Yellow, White or Rose: Choosing Your Gold

The difference between yellow, white and rose gold is what is alloyed with it. How each wears, what maintenance each needs, and how to choose.

All three are gold. What differs is what the gold is mixed with, and that mixture changes the colour, the hardness and the maintenance.

Yellow

Gold alloyed with metals that leave its natural colour intact. It is the traditional choice across most of Asia, it needs no surface treatment, and its colour is permanent. What you buy is what you will have in thirty years.

White

Gold alloyed with white metals to neutralise the yellow, then usually plated with rhodium for a bright, cool finish.

The important part: rhodium plating wears. It is a surface, not the metal underneath. Depending on wear it will need reapplying every year or two, and as it thins the piece drifts slightly warm before anyone consciously notices.

This is normal, inexpensive, and worth knowing before you buy rather than after.

Rose

Gold alloyed with a higher proportion of copper, which produces the warm pink tone. The copper also makes it somewhat harder than yellow gold of the same purity.

Its colour is inherent rather than plated, so it does not need refreshing. Over many years copper can deepen the tone very slightly, most owners consider this an improvement.

Rose gold is our own house colour, and the reason is straightforward: it flatters the widest range of skin tones of the three, and it photographs beautifully against dark backgrounds.

Choosing

What is already worn on that hand? Mixing metals is entirely acceptable now, but it should look intended.

How much maintenance is realistic? If a yearly re-plating appointment will never happen, white gold will not stay white.

What suits the skin? Cooler complexions often carry white gold well; warmer and olive tones tend to glow against yellow and rose.
