How Long Does a Bespoke Engagement Ring Take?
From first consultation to finished ring, the realistic timeline for a bespoke engagement ring, what causes delays, and how early to start before a proposal.
The most common mistake we see is not budget. It is arriving three weeks before the proposal.
The realistic timeline
Consultation, week 1. We talk. Occasion, budget, her hand, her habits, what she already wears. This takes an hour or so and it decides everything after it.
Design, week 1 to 2. Casey draws. You see the drawing, we refine it, you approve it before any metal is cut.
Stone selection, week 2 to 3. We source options to the specification and you see them. If you want something unusual, a particular cut, a coloured stone, a specific size, this is where time expands.
Making, week 3 to 6. Casting, setting, finishing. This is bench work and it cannot be usefully rushed.
Total: six to eight weeks for a straightforward bespoke ring.
Add time if
- The stone is unusual. Fancy shapes, coloured stones and anything above a certain size may take weeks to source properly
- You want to see several stones. Worth doing, adds a week
- The design changes after approval. Normal, but it resets the making clock
- It falls near a festive period. Every workshop in the country is busy before Chinese New Year and through wedding season
When to start
Three months before you intend to propose. That gives comfortable margin.
Two months is workable.
Under six weeks and we are compressing something. It can be done, we have done it, but choices narrow, and the stone selection is usually what suffers.
What actually causes delays
Almost never the workshop. Almost always:
Indecision at the drawing stage. Entirely normal. Build time for it rather than pretending you will decide immediately.
Waiting for a stone. The right stone at the right price does not always exist this week.
Sizing uncertainty. If we cannot confirm her size we may build to a best estimate and resize after, which adds a week at the end.
If you are genuinely short of time
Tell us at the start. There are honest ways to compress:
- Choose from stones already available rather than sourcing
- Keep the setting to a design we have made before
- Propose with a finished piece and commission the bespoke ring together afterward, more couples do this than you would expect, and it removes the guesswork from both size and taste
