How to Measure Your Wrist for a Bracelet

How to measure your wrist properly, how much room to add for different bracelet styles, and why an adjustable extension chain solves most sizing problems.

Bracelets are sized far more loosely than rings, which is fortunate, but it also means most people wear one that does not sit properly.

Measuring

Wrap a strip of paper or a soft tape around your wrist, just below the wrist bone, toward the hand. Snug, not tight. Mark the overlap and measure in centimetres.

That number is your wrist circumference. It is not your bracelet length.

How much to add

Snug fit, add 1.5cm. Sits close, moves very little. Suits fine chains and pieces with a pendant that should stay in position.

Comfort fit, add 2cm. The standard. Moves a little, sits at the wrist bone, slides slightly when the hand drops.

Loose fit, add 2.5 to 3cm. Drapes toward the hand. Suits heavier statement pieces and anyone who dislikes anything close to the skin.

For a woven or flat band that sits flush, we lean toward the snug end. For a linked or beaded piece with visible movement, comfort is better.

Why extension chains matter more than people think

Almost every piece we make carries a fine adjustable extension chain, and it is not a cost-saving shortcut. It is a functional decision.

An extension chain of 2 to 3cm covers all of this and turns a fixed object into one that fits on any day.

Signs the length is wrong

Too tight, it marks the skin, it does not rotate at all, it catches when you push a sleeve.

Too loose, the clasp migrates to the underside of the wrist, the piece slides over the hand, and it snags on bags and door handles. Loose bracelets are the ones that get damaged.

The correct length lets the piece rotate freely but not travel over the hand.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard bracelet length for women?

Roughly 17 to 19cm for most adult wrists, but measure rather than assume.

Should a bracelet spin around the wrist?

It should rotate freely. It should not slide over the hand.

Can a bracelet be shortened?

Usually yes, by removing links or shortening a chain. Lengthening is harder and may require matching material.

How do I buy a bracelet as a gift without measuring?

Choose a piece with an extension chain, and err slightly long.
