How to Find Your Ring Size at Home (Without Guessing)

How to measure ring size at home with paper or an existing ring, why fingers change through the day, and how to size a surprise proposal ring without asking.

A ring should sit snugly and slide on and off with very little resistance. That is the whole test. Everything else is method.

The paper strip method

Cut a strip of paper about 5mm wide. Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug but not tight. Mark where it overlaps, lay it flat, measure the length in millimetres. That measurement is the circumference, and any jeweller can convert it.

Do it three times and take the largest reading. Paper compresses, and a single measurement almost always runs small.

The existing ring method

More accurate, if the ring is worn on the same finger. Place it on a ruler and measure the inside diameter across the widest point.

Do not measure a ring worn on a different finger. Fingers on the same hand vary by a full size or more.

Why timing matters more than method

Fingers change size constantly:

• Warm weather and exercise swell them, sometimes by half a size
• Cold shrinks them noticeably
• Morning is usually the smallest point of the day
• Salt, alcohol and long flights all cause temporary swelling

Measure in the late afternoon or evening, at normal room temperature, when the hand is at its typical size.

Sizing a surprise

The classic approach still works: borrow a ring she already wears on the correct finger and bring it in. Take it for one evening rather than several days.

If borrowing is impossible, ask a close friend or her mother. In our experience they usually know, and they enjoy being asked.

Failing both, we would rather size slightly large than small. A ring that is a little loose can be worn on the day and resized afterward. A ring that will not pass the knuckle cannot.

What we ask in the atelier

Which hand and which finger? The dominant hand is usually a little larger.

Wide band or narrow? Wide bands fit more tightly. A 6mm band typically needs a quarter to a half size more than a 2mm band.

Any joint swelling? If the knuckle is larger than the base of the finger, the ring must clear the knuckle and will then be loose at the base. There are solutions, sizing beads, a hinged shank, but we need to know before we build.

Frequently asked questions

Can every ring be resized?

No. Full eternity rings, tension settings and some patterned bands cannot be resized without remaking. Ask before you buy.

How much can a ring be resized?

Usually one to two sizes either way without affecting the design.

Should I size up for a wide band?

Yes, generally a quarter to a half size.

Is it better to be slightly loose or slightly tight?

Slightly loose. Circulation matters, and a stuck ring is a genuine problem.
