Buying Gold in Malaysia: How the Day Rate Works

Two pieces of the same weight can cost different amounts at the same shop on the same day. The reason is the split between metal value and workmanship.

Anyone buying gold jewellery in Malaysia meets the same structure, whether in a chain store or an independent atelier. It is worth understanding before you compare two prices.

The price has two halves

The metal. Weight multiplied by the current price per gram for that fineness. This is set by the international gold market and moves daily, sometimes noticeably within a single day.

The workmanship. Usually called the making charge or upah. This pays for how the piece was made, and it does not move with the gold price.

Two bracelets of identical weight and fineness can differ substantially in price because one was machine-made in volume and the other took a person several days.

Why intricate pieces cost more per gram

A hollow, finely woven bracelet contains less gold than a solid one of the same size, yet may cost more. The labour is in the weaving, not the weight.

This confuses buyers who have learned to think per gram. Per gram is the right lens for a plain chain and the wrong lens for anything worked.

Fineness and what it is for

Malaysia trades heavily in 916: 91.6% gold, what the rest of the world calls 22k. It also sells 999, which is essentially pure.

999 is softer. For a piece worn daily against desks, keyboards and car doors, that softness is a real disadvantage. 916 wears better, and for most jewellery it is the more sensible purchase.

999 makes more sense when you are buying gold primarily as a store of value.

Buying back

When you sell jewellery back, you are usually paid on the metal alone. The making charge does not come back, you paid for labour, and labour is consumed.

This is the single most common surprise in gold buying, and it is not a scam. It simply means intricate jewellery should be bought to be worn and enjoyed, not as an investment instrument. If your purpose is investment, that is what bars and coins are for.

Practical points before you buy

For bespoke work

The same structure applies, with the metal calculated from the finished weight, which is knowable from the CAD model before any gold is bought. Ask for it at that stage.
